Derry man who told police he didn't know cannabis was illegal is fined £125 in court

A 20-year-old man who claimed he was not aware cannabis was illegal has been fined at Derry Magistrates Court. Bernard McFadden, of Dove Gardens in Derry, admitted possession of cannabis on July 21. The court heard that police conducted a search and found two small clear plastic bags with cannabis in them. The court was told the defendant admitted it was cannabis and said it was for personal use and added that he did not know it was illegal. McFadden refused to say where he got the cannabis from. Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client ‘knew rightly’ it was illegal and added he had nothing for drugs on his record. McFadden was fined £125.
