Homeowners in Derry urged to ensure their homes are secure following another spate of burglaries at the weekend

Following a number of domestic burglaries over the weekend the Derry and Strabane PCSP is again reminding householders to 'Close it, Lock it, Check it'. Speaking on after the burglaries Alderman Mary Hamilton, Chairperson of Policing and Community Safety Partnership said. “We are fully supportive of any initiatives that raise public awareness of the need to keep homes, vehicles and property safe. The PCSP, PSNI and our community partners have been successful in disseminating practical advice and preventative measures to protect homes, vehicles and property from burglars. "I would encourage residents to secure their homes and property by closing and locking all doors, windows, gates and vehicles even if they are just nipping out for a few minutes. "From experience we know that the majority of home break-ins and vehicle thefts are opportunistic with criminals taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows. "It is frustrating that many of these crimes are easily preventable and it is again worth reminding residents to take a few simple steps every day to keep their homes and property secure from criminals. This advice is even more important at this time of year with valuable Christmas presents being kept in homes and vehicles.” Alderman Hamilton continued: “Your PCSP will continue to support the PSNI and our community partners to tackle this issue through ongoing support for Neighbourhood Watch Schemes, provision of dedicated patrolling by Community Safety Wardens and the provision of support and advice on securing property. I would also ask that anyone with any information on these burglaries to contact police or Crimestoppers.”
