Bin collections confirmed by council for Christmas holiday period
10 Dec 2018
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, has urged householders to familiarise themselves with Council’s bin collection and Recycling Centre opening arrangements for the Christmas holiday period. There will be some minor changes to bin collections across the city and district and affected householders will be informed of this via special bin stickers which they should look out for in the coming days. All Recycling Centres will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day and will close at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve with only some centres opening from 10am to 2pm on Boxing Day. Mayor Boyle encouraged people to check Council’s website and social media pages to familiarise themselves with the changes to ensure household waste can be efficiently disposed of over the festive season. “The Christmas holiday period necessitates some minor changes to Council’s waste and recycling services but by familiarising yourself with the arrangements now it should allow householders to enjoy a stress free holiday period,” he said. “Many bin collection services will be collected as normal but Council staff will be placing stickers on bins in Derry and Strabane which clearly show the changes to bins that would normally be collected on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Boxing Day. “I would encourage householders to inform older neighbours who may not see the stickers or have access to the internet to check the collection times to ensure everyone’s bins are collected during this period. “As we prepare to receive gifts and new items into our homes we should also remember that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and so we should all make more of an effort to recycle and upcycle goods where possible.” In the Derry area bins normally collected on Christmas Day (Tuesday) will be serviced on Saturday December 22nd, bins due to be collected on Boxing Day (Wednesday) will be emptied on Saturday December 29th and bins scheduled for collection on New Year’s Day will be collected on Saturday January 5th. In Strabane bins normally collected on Christmas Day (Tuesday) will be serviced on Saturday December 22nd, bins due to be collected on Boxing Day (Wednesday) will be emptied as normal and bins scheduled for collection on New Year’s Day will be collected on Saturday December 29th. Recycling Centres will all close at 4pm on Christmas Eve and remain closed on Christmas Day with only Strahan’s Road, Pennyburn and Glendermott opening on Boxing Day from 10am to 2pm. All centres will operate normally from Thursday 27th through to Sunday 30th December with an early closure of 4pm on New Year’s Eve and a full closure of all centres on New Year’s Day. The New2You Centre are setting up a drop off container outside their shop at Pennyburn Recycling Centre where any unwanted furniture or electrical items can be left off during the holiday period. The items will be upcycled and refurbished by unemployed and disabled people training in trade skills and sold at affordable prices in centre in the New Year - helping people re-skill while also helping our environment.
