Returned for trial on rape and threatening to kill children charges

A man has been returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on a series of charges including oral rape and threatening to kill children. Paul Mulhern (50), of Circular Road in the Creggan area of the city, appeared at a preliminary enquiry at the local Magistrate's Court. He is charged with the rape of a woman between March 14 and March 15 2016. He also faces a charge of causing the same female to engage in a sexual act, falsely imprisoning her, assaulting her occasioning actual bodily harm and three counts of common assault on the same dates. He is further charged with threatening to kill the woman's children and the theft of a laptop and mobile phone again on the same dates. It was accepted there was a case to answer and there were no contrary submissions. Mulhern said he did not wish to call any witnesses or make any statement at this stage. He was returned to the local Crown Court sitting on January 17 and released on his own bail.
