Derry man jailed for child neglect

A 48-year-old man Derry man has been jailed at the local Magistrate's Court for child neglect. The man who cannot be named to protect the identity of the children had been convicted at a hearing last month. At today's hearing the court was told the man had not turned up for a probation meeting as he had given them a wrong address. At a re-arranged meeting he said he was going to appeal so it was irrelevant and then when he did turn up he was three quarters of an hour late. Defence barrister Andrew Moriarty said that it was neglect not cruelty that his client had been convicted of. District Judge Barney McElholm said that too many victims of domestic abusers neglect had as bad consequences as anything else. He said that the man had displayed 'an arrogant attitude' towards probation and sentenced him to four months in prison.
