Man returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on child sex charges

A 57-year-old man has been returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on a series of sex charges. The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victim in the case, appeared at a preliminary enquiry at Derry Magistrate's Court today. He is charged with a total of 25 charges including 11 charges of committing an act of gross indecency with a child. He also faced 12 charges of indecent assault on a female child, one count of child cruelty and a charge of assaulting the child occasioning her actual bodily harm. The charges relate to dates between January 1 1987 and January 1 1996. It was accepted there was a case to answer and there were no contrary submissions. The man said he did not want to call any witnesses or make any statement at this stage. He was returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on 29 January next and released on his own bail.
