'Sad day' for Buncrana - iconic ballroom and well-known store destroyed in major blaze

Plaza fire
One of Ireland's best known "ballrooms of romance" has been extensively damaged in a major fire. The Plaza Ballroom in Buncrana and the well-known John Barr drapery next door on Buncrana Main Street were destroyed in the blaze which broke out around 9.00pm last night. Over 40 firefighters, including a number from Derry, fought throughout the night to bring the blaze under control. The adjacent Excelsior Bar sustained smoke damage. Upper Main Street in Buncrana remains closed and is expected to remain sealed for another 24 hours.. County Councillor Rena Donaghey said it was a "very sad day" for the town. The Plaza Ballroom - which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year - was popular during the late 1950s and 1960s with many major stars and bands performings there. Many of the country's favourite singers and groups still perform in the Plaza which hosts community events and also used for wedding parties and charity fundraising functions. John Barr's shop is popular with foreign tourists and supplied uniforms to schools throughout Inishowen.
