People Before Profit has congratulated school students in Derry for organising a “strike” this Friday in protest against the failure of Governments to take serious action against climate change.
A rally as part of the Global Climate Strike will take place at Guildhall Square between 1pm-3pm on Friday.
People Before Profit Waterside candidate and environmental campaigner Maeve O'Neill said climate change is the most serious problem facing the world today.
"What used to be a scare story is now staring us in the face - and much of the problem is man-made," she explained.
“We have to drastically reduce dependence on fossil fuels and aim at zero waste not only in refuse disposal but also in industry and agriculture. We must preserve our natural environment, stop destroying our woodlands to make way for ‘development’.
“We have to clean up our air. The area around Creggan Street/Marlborough is among the worst in these islands for air pollution. We have to keep our rivers free of toxins, for fishing and for the enjoyment of the people.
“These measures and the technology needed to bring them about are readily available."
She added: “We particularly welcome that the fight against climate change is being led by young people who have their lives to lead and the planet to save.
“We trust that schools and teachers will not stand in the way of students playing a part in this world-wide, life-or-death effort.
“The future depends on the coming generation.”
