A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court in connection with an attempt to hijack a car with a woman and children in it. Anthony Roberts (49), of Drumleck Drive in the Shantallow area of the city, faced a total of five charges in relation to an incident in the Ballymagroarty area in the early hours of yesterday morning. Roberts was charged with attempting to hijack a vehicle, attempting to steal a handbag, driving while unfit, failing to provide a specimen and possessing cannabis. A police officer said he believed he could connect Roberts to the charges. He asked what the police attitude would be to bail and the officer said that subject to interview with the defendant's mother they would be amenable to bail. District Judge Mark Mc Garrity adjourned the bail application and remanded Roberts in custody to 13 May.
