Council Election: Alliance candidate takes seat in Faughan DEA

In a day that has seen Sinn Fein's electoral supremacy badly dented in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area another shock has also seen the Alliance Party take a seat in the Faughan DEA. The election in this area so far has been characterised the resurgence of the SDLP and the election of a People Before Profit candidate and the first ever Aontu representative in Northern Ireland. The conclusion of the Faughan DEA election on the seventh count saw first time candidate Rachel Ferguson elected, albeit below the 1,191 quota. Sinn Fein returned party stalwart Paul Fleming and the SDLP returned Jim McKeever. However, the nationalist party lost a seat as Gus Hastings failed to be re-elected. The presence of former SDLP councillor Brenda Stevenson as a third candidate is probably the reason for that. The first two seats were taken by the DUP's Graham Warke and Ryan McCready.
