Lyra McKee: Music star Gary Lightbody to take part in walk in memory of murdered journalist
16 May 2019
Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody is to take part in a walk from Belfast to Derry next week marking the life of the journalist Lyra McKee.
The organising team of Lyra's Walk say they are absolutely delighted to announce the support of the globally renowned singer. Born in Bangor, Lightbody has relatives in Derry. A spokesperson for Lyra's Walk said: "It's a very poignant development for us at Lyra's Walk, when we started this, we were only a small group of five people, now we have over 500 registrations and several notable performers and musicians offering their support. "People are deeply affected by Lyra’s murder and we wanted to do something that would bring people from all backgrounds and political persuasions together in unity and offer a chance to engage with each other in constructive dialogue along the way. "Gary will join the walk in the final leg at Dungiven and walk to Derry as an individual with the rest of us. "We now have increased capacity for our event taking place now at Ebrington Square event space and are featuring key note speakers and performances from other local artists including Hex Hue featuring Lyra's Choir and Abby Oliveira and more. "We're calling on everyone to pick up a free ticket and join us on Monday 27th 3pm-6pm. "We encourage people to take part even if you can only do a few miles. We are reaching out to community and youth groups from all over Northern Ireland to register and walk with us, you can contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org. Political parties are welcome to walk as individuals. Tickets available via
