Suspected firearm and ammunition seized in Derry

The PSNI has said that a suspected firearm and a quantity of ammunition were seized during a search operation in Derry on Thursday (June 27). Detectives from the Serious Crime Branch recovered the material during an ongoing investigation into dissident republican activity in the city. The PSNI added that the seized items will now be subject to forensic examination and that detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee on April 18 in Derry have been made aware of the seizure of the material. Also on Thursday, a 37-year-old man was detained under the Terrorism Act by detectives from the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation Unit relation to investigations into dissident republican activity. And, detectives from the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch also arrested a 52-year-old man as part the same investigation. Both men were taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for questioning.

Detective Inspector Clara Heaton said: “Detectives conducted a search of a property in Creggan area of the city and have seized a number of items which have been taken away for further examination.
