Derry councillor calls on the DUP to stand up for 'ordinary workers' at Harland and Wolff
30 Jul 2019
A local councillor has challenged the DUP to bring its influence to bear by intervening to save jobs at the Harland and Wolff shipyard. People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin said: "Harland and Wolff workers have occupied their shipyard in a last ditch effort to save their jobs. We should all stand in solidarity with them. The workers and their families shouldn't be punished for decision's they had no control over. The DUP constantly claim they're being listened to in Westminster by the Tories. "Now's their opportunity to stand up for ordinary people for once by demanding Boris Johnson's new government intervene to save the jobs. If Johnson refuses to act they should pull the plug on the confidence and supply deal. Secretary of State Julian Smith should be called on to actually do something. "UNITE the union are absolutely right to call for the shipyard to be nationalised. The workers are holding a noon rally at the shipyard on Tuesday. We'll be sending our support from Derry."
