A section of the Limavady Road
NI Water is due to commence work at the end of March to install new dedicated stormwater infrastructure on a section of the Limavady Road in Derry.
This work forms part of NI Water’s wider storm separation programme, aimed at removing stormwater from the combined sewerage network to reduce the risk of out-of-sewer flooding, provide more capacity and help support localised development.
The work on Limavady Road - which will include the installation of approximately 250m of new stormwater pipe and the construction of six new manholes between Caw Park and Broomhill Avenue - is planned to start on Saturday, March 28 and will last approximately nine weeks overall.
This work has been programmed to commence on this date in an effort to complete pipelaying adjacent to the schools during the Easter holiday period. To reduce the overall impact of the works, NI Water’s contractor CivCo will work extended hours, where possible, to deliver the scheme in the shortest possible timeframe.
Pipelaying will get underway adjacent to Caw Park and will progress as far as the junction with Broomhill Avenue. Connections to existing infrastructure within Lisnagowan Court will also form part of the work.
To ensure the safety of the public and construction workers during this work, a continuous lane closure (north-bound) will be in place around any working area. In a bid to reduce congestion, traffic flow on Limavady Road will be controlled through the use of a manned stop/go system during peak hours and by temporary traffic lights during off-peak times (out-of-working hours).
Bus stops located within the lane closure/working area will need to be suspended while work is ongoing. This is both for safety reasons and to prevent traffic build up. Signage will be displayed on suspended bus stops with the nearest alternative stop highlighted.
In an additional effort to reduce traffic congestion, CivCo will encourage the use of a diversionary route via Cresent Link for non-local traffic. This route will be advertised via digital signage boards located at the southern and northern approaches to Limavady Road.
The project team has engaged with residents, businesses and schools in the area with regards to traffic management arrangements and will continue to liaise with all stakeholders as work progresses.
The team would like to highlight that construction sites are dangerous areas for unauthorised persons, especially children, and we would appreciate your co-operation in ensuring that children do not play in or around any site or machinery.
Working areas will have warning signs in place to protect the public from any hazards. The public are advised to stay out of these working areas for their own safety.
NI Water and our project team from AtkinsRéalis and CivCo take this opportunity to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while we undertake this essential work to reduce the risk of out-of-sewer flooding in the Limavady Road/Lisnagowan Court area and help support new development in the city through increased localised network capacity.
