A new app developed by Derry man Patrick McCann is helping drivers identify large fuel price differences between nearby petrol stations using official government fuel price data.

The Fuel Go app uses the British Government's Fuel Finder price transparency data, introduced following the Competition and Markets Authority investigation into the UK road fuel market.

The data shows that fuel prices can vary significantly between nearby stations.

In one recent example observed locally, fuel was 25p per litre cheaper than the nearest alternative.

For a typical 65-litre tank in a family car, that difference would amount to a saving of more than £16 per fill-up.

"Fuel Go processes real-time price updates from more than 7,000 petrol stations across the UK, allowing drivers to quickly see nearby stations and identify where fuel is cheapest before filling up," said Mr McCann.

"The app also integrates with Apple CarPlay, allowing drivers to view nearby fuel prices directly on their vehicle dashboard," he added.

"Fuel prices can vary dramatically even between stations that are only a short distance apart. The government’s Fuel Finder data makes those differences visible, and Fuel Go helps drivers quickly find the best value fuel nearby.”

The UK Government introduced the Fuel Finder price transparency initiative following recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to improve visibility of pump prices and increase competition between retailers.

"Fuel Go is available now on the Apple App Store."
