Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership hosted a special International Women’s Day exhibition on Monday that brought together local residents, families and the citywide community to celebrate and honour the remarkable women who shaped Creggan over the years.

A large crowd attended Monday’s exhibition to celebrate the women being recognised and to share in the stories that reflect the values and spirit of the local area.

The event was an opportunity not only to honour individual achievements but also, recognise the collective role women have played in building and supporting the local community.

The exhibition was opened by the Mayor, Ruairi McHugh who hailed it as recognising women from across Creggan and the city as a whole whose dedication, compassion and commitment have made a lasting impact on community life, education and local development.

Indeed, many of the women featured have worked quietly behind the scenes over the decades, yet their contributions have played a vital role in strengthening the places where people live, learn and grow.

Speaking at the opening, Danielle Devine, manager, CNP said: ‘Today’s event highlights the stories of women who cared beyond duty, shared their talents, and uplifted others through love, unity and service.

‘It also acknowledged the strength, courage and resilience of women whose work has helped pave the way for future generations within the community.’

The exhibition also marked the opening phase of a wider Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership project aimed at preserving and celebrating the many stories of the people of Creggan and adjoining communities.

Emphasising that the event was just the beginning of plans the Engage Project has, Paula Moore, Community Development Worker, Engage Project added: ‘Over the coming months, the Engage Project will continue to build through the creation of a community video and a series of murals across the local area this summer, ensuring that the legacy of these women continues to inspire future generations.’

Mayor McHugh praised all involved in making the exhibition such a success and congratulated Danielle and her team at Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership for their sterling work over the years, wishing them continued success.

He concluded with ‘the women of Creggan have long been leaders, organisers, carers, Advocates, and most important of all, the changemakers within this community. They strengthen the fabric of the local community life, and their contribution has been both remarkable and inspiring.’

Danielle Devine said she would encourage visitors to explore the exhibition, read the stories on display and reflect on the important role women play in shaping strong and connected communities.

Refreshments were served and the day’s proceedings saw many through the doors, finding their family connections, reading the stories and proudly capturing the moment with their phone cameras.

Monday’s event was funded by the Big Lottery Community Fund and held as part of the Engage Project at Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership.
