The man appeared before Derry Magistrates' Court
A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with assault.
Michael Coyle (43) of Rock Mills in Derry was charged with the offence that was said to have occurred on January 28 after police responded to a report that Coyle had spat on the injured party who worked in Rock Mills.
The court heard that the injured party was greeted by Coyle shouting for help when he arrived in the building and when he tried to go to another resident's room Coyle was said to have spat on him, slapped him multiple times and spat on him again.
Coyle claimed that the dispute was over the cleanliness of his room and said that the injured party wasn't listening.
He also admitted to slapping him on the shoulder but claimed it was 'more like a pat'.
Coyle has 44 previous convictions and in March 2024 was given a sentence of three months, suspended for two years.
Bail was granted on conditions including Coyle not have contact with the injured party and he not enter Rock Mills.
He will appear again on February 26.
