Grandparents hold a special place in the family, offering a wealth of wisdom, love, and laughter and this was celebrated in style at Sacred Heart PS on Wednesday morning, beginning with a packed congregation of staff, pupils and grandparents and Mass with Fr. Patrick Lagan at Immaculate Conception Church before returning next door to the school for refreshments and spending precious time with grandchildren.
Celebrating Grandparents Day at Sacred Heart saw over 300 grandparents take time after Mass to see what their grandchildren spend their time at school learning about life and celebrating Catholic Schools Week.
Principal Mrs. Louise Cunning, who fondly coined this her ‘favourite day of the year,’ took time to accompany the school choir at the Mass beforehand alongside Mr Murphy and Miss Bowen.
A standout moment was the church being full to capacity and the P1 to P7 pupils joining Fr. Lagan around the altar before the celebration of Mass.
Overjoyed with the superb turnout for Wednesday’s celebration, Mrs. Cunning said: ‘We were packed to the rafters for both the celebration of the Mass and afterwards in the school.

‘There is something special when grandparents take time to visit the school. An air of relaxation and peace seems to descend as our pupils spend time at their desks with grandparents lovingly showing them their school work and explaining what they take part in during their school day.’
Grandparents made their way around the classes and spent time admiring the many art pieces throughout the maze of corridors followed by an amazing morning tea hosted by the school in the assembly hall.
‘Wednesday was a morning full of joy, laughter, and memories to treasure and an opportunity for our pupils to spend time with very special people who play an important part in their lives. A massive thank you from our school community to all those who attended,’ concluded the Sacred Heart PS Principal.
