The Irish Language is going ó neart go neart all over the island and beyond, and Derry is no different.
From our flourishing Irish-medium Education sector to the normalisation of the language across the city it’s an exciting time to be an Irish-speaker, and also an exciting time to begin to learn Irish.
At Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin we don’t only provide classes, but we also provide the social experience, giving everyone from native speakers to new beginners an experience through Irish.
As someone learning Irish at the Cultúrann you will have the chance to take part in céilís, Quiz Nights, Concerts, and even trips to the Gaeltacht so that you can practice your cúpla focal.
Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin is open to everyone and anyone from young to old no matter your background. Our Club Óige Setanta (Youth Club) welcomes students from the Gaelscoileanna in the area and provides an important service to the locality.
Furthermore, we have events for teenagers who are studying Irish at school through our Céad Chéim Eile scheme. In Acadamh Cheoil Chaoimhín Uí Dhochartaigh music lessons are provided in a range of traditional instruments and give our students opportunities to perform not only here in the city but also beyond.
Outreach classes
Although we see ourselves as a hub of the Irish Language in the city, we recognise the importance of reaching out to those who are working within different areas of the city.
We currently run outreach classes both in Eglinton and in Clooney Hall, as well as a Ciorcal Comhrá in St. Columb’s Park House.
Our classes for the year are well underway, but there will be more chances to sign up in the new year. So make sure that you keep an eye out for any information, not only for our classes but also for the exciting events we have coming in 2026.
Is fear go déanach ná go brách – It’s better late than never. Bígí linn and join the resurgence of Gaeilge in the city.
