PSNI Chief Inspector John Caldwell
A man who is due to be sentenced at Belfast Crown Court in Belfast for a claim of responsibility for the February 2023 attempted murder in Omagh of now retired Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, has appeared before Derry Magistrate's Court charged with breaching his bail.
Caolan Robert Brogan (26) from Bluebell Hill Gardens in the Brandywell area of the city has admitted possessing a document in which Dissident Republicans claimed responsibilithy for shooting Mr. Caldwell nine times.
A date for sentencing at Belfast Crown Court for that offence has yet to be fixed and the case is to be reviewed on Thursday of this week.
Brogan admitted breaching his bail conditions by going to the bar outside of his curfew hours to watch a football match on Saturday night and by possessing a mobile phone.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said Brogan was admitting both offences.
A detective constable told District Judge Conor Heaney that he had no issue with Brogan being re-admitted to bail under the same terms and conditions.
He said Brogan has been on bail for the last two and a half years and this was his first breach. The officer said Brogan had also complied with twenty-two previous bail variations.
The police witness said the mobile phone seized when Brogan was searched outside a bar in the Bishop Street area of the city would be forensically examined.
Re-admitting the defendant to bail the District Judge warned him that if he breached his bail conditions again he would be remanded in custody.
