Derry pair returned for trial over fraudulent evasion of custom duty and VAT

Two people have been returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on charges of fraudulent evasion of custom duty and fraudulent evasion of VAT.

Kevin Doherty (50) of Elaghmore Park in Derry and Amy Roberts (39) of Fern Park in Derry appeared at a Preliminary Enquiry at the local Magistrate's Court

Doherty faced six charges of evading custom duty and three charges of evading VAT mainly involving large quantities of tobacco and cigarettes, that were said to have occurred on July 23 last year.

Roberts faced two charges of evading custom duty and one of evading VAT. 

It was accepted that there was a case to answer and there were no contrary submissions.

Both chose not to submit any statements and not to call any witnesses.

They were returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on December 15 and released on bail.
