Man who stole coat was detected because of facial recognition technology

The man stole the coat from Frasers Derry store.

Derry Magistrates' Court heard today how a man who stole a coat from Frasers in Foyleside was detected because the store has facial recognition technology.
Conor Agnew (31) of no fixed abode admitted one charge of stealing a coat valued at £114 from the Foyleside store on November 12.
The court heard that police were called to Frasers at 10.20am on that date after a report of a theft.
CCTV showed the defendant entering the store at 9.46am and leaving a short time later with the coat and making g no attempt to pay.
A police officer told the court that on November 18 Agnew entered the store and was recognised as the thief by use of facial recognition technology and he was arrested.
The coat was not recovered.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client accepted the charge.
He said Agnew had addiction and mental health issues.
The solicitor said the defendant was originally from the Limerick area but had 'gravitated towards the North.'
Agnew was imprisoned for two months.
