A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with common assault after 'seeing red' in a bookies.

Robert Mallett (34) of Berryburn Park in Ardmore in Derry was charged with the offence that occurred on March 29 this year.

The court was shown footage of Mallett putting his hands around the neck of the injured party after seeing him in a bookies.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that there had been 'no serious injuries' sustained and that the injured party did not seek medical attention.

He added that there had been a history between the two men, with Mallett alleging that the injured party had previously threatened him and his wife.

He also said that the encounter had come about by chance when Mallett walked into the bookies, saw the injured party and 'saw red', telling the court that the attack 'was not premeditated'.

He was sentenced to four months in custody, suspended for two years.
