Launch of Derry campaign warns residents about harmful lenders this Christmas.
People in Derry are being warned to stay alert to harmful money lenders this Christmas as a new campaign launches to promote safer, more affordable ways to borrow and spend.
The ‘Don’t Get Bitten’ campaign has been launched by local organisations across the city to raise awareness of the dangers of high-interest loans that can push individuals and families into serious debt.
Striking new billboards which will be launched at Foyleside Shopping Centre are urging people not to get caught out by harmful lenders and loan sharks, and to reach out early to local advice services if they’re struggling with money worries.
The campaign aims to tackle the growing problem of people turning to quick cash traps to cover rising household costs - a trend that spikes every year in the run-up to Christmas.
Speaking after launching the campaign at Foyleside Shopping Centre alongside Deputy Mayor Niree McMorris, Karen Mullan, Director of the Foyle Network Foundation, said: “We have seen an increase in people who are struggling with rising household costs accessing loans with extortionate high interest rates. This is pushing them further into debt and poverty.
“With Christmas approaching, many people feel pressure to spend more, and that’s when harmful lenders often step in and take advantage of people who are already struggling to make ends meet.
“All of us are aware how stressful this time of year can be. People want to make Christmas special for their families, but we’re encouraging everyone to plan ahead, spend within their means and seek proper advice before borrowing.
“Quick cash traps with rip-off interest rates are not the answer - safer, more affordable options do exist locally through credit unions and other lenders.

“There are so many local services that can help with budgeting, benefits and affordable credit - all free and confidential. We would encourage people to get in touch with those if you are in need of help.”
This year’s campaign is being rolled out by the Foyle Network Foundation alongside Foyleside Shopping Centre, Skeoge Community Hub, Derry Credit Union, Pennyburn Credit Union, Waterside Credit Union, ASK Advice Services, Apex Housing Association, Dove House and Community Restorative Justice (CRJ).
Together, we are encouraging people to choose safer, community-based alternatives to borrowing, and to speak up early if they need help managing bills or debt this winter.
For advice or information on where to turn for help, residents can contact their local community organisation confidentially by phone or email.
