Cullen’s Amusements to hold sensory session this Sunday in Derry
Cullen’s Amusements are set to hold a sensory session this Sunday, October 26.
The popular funfair will offer the session from 11am to 1pm in Ebrington Square, Derry.
The session is specially designed for adults and children with additional needs.
The morning will consist of reduced noise levels (gentler music and announcements), lowered lighting (easy on sensitive eyes), calm, patient, and welcoming environment, trained staff who understand and support additional needs, designated quiet areas available, access to all attractions in a relaxed atmosphere, no pressure just pure enjoyment at your own pace!
This is to be a special morning for everyone.
Sean Cullen from Cullen Amusements spoke to the Derry News about why they decided to hold the session and the deeper meaning behind it.
Mr Cullen said: “The sensory session is open to the people of Derry who have special needs requirements. Throughout the session there will be no loud noise, no strobe lighting, or big crowds. This is because a lot of people with sensory issues find it difficult to deal with those aspects.
“A lot of people then miss out on the experience of the funfair at Halloween.
“Cullen’s have always been passionate about everyone having the right to come to the funfair, enjoy themselves and have a good time.
“It is something that we have been doing now for many years. We don’t just do it in Derry, we do it in the majority of the events. “Especially in Derry it is an open invitation to who may have a special requirement.
“We have done this for a long time and see it as a way of giving back to the community. We have children within our own family who have special needs requirements and we thought you know what we would like to give this experience to the general public. A lot of people don’t have the opportunity to come to the funfair when it is noisy.
“As a family it is just something we are very passionate about offering the funfair experience at Cullen’s Ammusements.”
