The Derry and Strabane Healthy City and District Leadership Group welcomed Health Minister Mike Nesbitt yesterday (Thursday 24 July) to hear first-hand about the important intersectoral collaboration happening across the DCSDC area to promote health and tackle health inequalities.
The cross-sector group meets quarterly to set the direction for the Derry and Strabane Healthy City and District project and identify opportunities for collaboration.
The minister heard details of the Live Better pre-diabetes community education programme which was recently delivered within the Triax area (Bogside, Brandywell, Creggan and The Fountain, which is set to be scaled up across the Council area this Autumn.
Developing Healthy Communities Chief Executive Edel O’Doherty says: “The meeting was a great opportunity to share a project which is already making a meaningful impact to people at risk of diabetes in our communities.
“We appreciated the Minister sharing details of the Health and Social Care Reset Plan, which aims to stabilise, reform and deliver our health services amid ongoing financial pressures. It's encouraging to see leadership committed to addressing both the challenges and opportunities within the healthcare system whilst acknowledging the need to create health at community level.”
Developing Healthy Communities is the local co-ordinator for Derry City & Strabane’s membership of the World Health Organization European Network of Healthy Cities. According to WHO, a healthy city is not one that has achieved a particular health status. It is conscious of health and striving to improve it.
The requirements are a commitment to health and a process and structure to achieve it. The project is supported by the Public Health Agency and Derry City and Strabane District Council.
Derry City & Strabane achieved WHO Healthy City designation for the third time in 2022, with a new phase of the programme now set to begin in 2026.
