A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with a number of drug offences.

Ciaran Burke (32) of Lisfannon Park in Derry was charged with, on July 7, being in possession of class A drug with intent to supply.

Police were at Burke's property and spoke to his mother, who pointed them in the direction of his bedroom.

When searching the room, police found a number of different suspected drugs, included suspected cocaine and crystal meth, and £3,000 cash.

Burke was subsequently arrested and claimed when interviewed that the drugs were for personal use only.

He also said that the white powder found was in fact a cutting agent and that the cash was money he'd been saving to buy his children scooters.

Defence solicitor Jack Quigley said that Burke, who has 37 previous convictions and eleven suspended sentences, had been staying out of trouble 'for around a year' but added that he is a drug addict who has had a bad relapse in the past few weeks.

District Judge Ted Magill said that Burke has an 'appalling' record and denied him bail.

He will appear again on July 31.
