The US flag flown at the US Naval Communications Station in Derry's Waterside on the day US President John F Kennedy was assassinated has been stolen from Foyle College, which stands on that site today. The naval base operated in the city between 1943 and 1977.

Speaking at Derry City and Strabane District Council's Business and Culture committee meeting on Tuesday afternoon, Alderman Darren Guy (UUP) appealed for the return of the iconic flag.

He said: "The missing flag is of great historical significance. On the day President Kennedy was shot  - November 22, 1963 - this flag was the one that was flown at the old 'Yankee Base' as we called in that area and one of the ex US veterans who were there at the time and who actually removed the flag later on that day, brought it to Foyle a couple of years ago and presented it to Foyle College, so they fly it now every July 4.

"It has great historical significance and they would just like the flag back. So, if anybody knows anything or could have a word with anybody who might be able to get the flag returned to the school, it would be very much appreciated."
