Derry Gael Gearalt Ó Mianain who raised £6,400 for local charity Fund a Food Drop has been congratulated for his efforts.
Gearalt raised the phenomenal amount through sponsorship while competing in the Ulster Poc Fada final.
In a social media post he said it was a great honour to compete in the Ulster Poc Fada final on behalf of the people of Gaza.
“May they get courage and hope from each poc,” he said. “All funds collected have been passed to Hilda Orr [Fund a Food Drop] who is an inspiration to us all with her amazing humanitarian work in Gaza.”
Extending her congratulations to Gearalt, Cllr Emma McGinley highlighted the money he raised was going to support the “vital humanitarian effort in Palestine”.
She said: “It will support the Palestinian people, who at this minute are enduring an ongoing genocide at the hands of the Israeli state forces, with the full backing of British, US and Western governments.”
Cllr McGinley, who was speaking at Council’s Governance and Strategic Planning committee meeting on Tuesday, also praised the Gaels from across Derry who were taking part in that day’s ‘Hunger for Palestine’ event.
During ‘Hunger For Palestine’ Gaels from clubs in the city embarked on a 24-hour hunger fast to raise money for GAA Palestine’s tour of Ireland later in the summer.
Cllr McGinley was taking part in the event with members of Sean Dolan’s GAC.
She said: “I am aware many others across the city are participating and sharing the link. I think it is really important that we acknowledge local efforts in supporting these initiatives that support the Palestinian people in whatever way that we can.
“Congratulations and good luck to everybody that’s taking part.”
