Derry Magistrates' Court

A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with a number of thefts across various different areas in the north.

Martin Trevor Stokes (19) of Cornshell Fields in Derry was charged with, among other alleged offences, stealing three bottles of spirits on May 25 to a value of £90, damaging a security barrier in a Newry shopping centre causing more than £600 worth of damage and stealing a number of items from various other shops, most of which came to a value of £500 or more.

He was also charged with stealing a number of items from Curry's in Ballymena that were later found in a branch of Cex.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and objected to bail, telling the court that, with 57 previous convictions and multiple breaches of bail, they have 'zero confidence' that he wouldn't reoffend.

The officer added that he is currently on bail in England with a condition that he reside there.

Defence barrister Sinead Rogan said that Stokes divided his time between living with family in England and living at his address in Derry.

She added that most of his 57 previous convictions were youth offences.

Bail was refused and he was remanded in custody and will appear again on July 24.
