Police attacked during second night of disorder in Derry

Police are dealing with a second night of disorder in Derry this evening (Tuesday, June 17).

A number of missiles, including masonry and petrol bombs, have been thrown towards officers in the Nailors Row area of the city.

Police have asked motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area until further notice.

On Monday night three officers were injured after police came under attack in the Nailors Row area.

A 13-year-old boy and an 18-year-old male were both arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour, and have both since been released on bail to allow for further police inquiries to be conducted.

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan posted on social media: "Tonight, for the second night in a row, it's happening on the streets of Derry. Homes in the Fountain were the target and it soon became the police when they intervened. Why???

"I'd appeal to any parents to ensure your children aren't caught up in this- we have sadly seen in the not too distant past how this situations can escalate with fatal consequences. Teenagers can end up with a criminal record that will affect their future chances of employment and travel."

The Irish Republican Socialist Party also called on the young people "who are currently attacking the Fountain estate and have been doing so the last few days to please desist immediately".

In a statement, the IRSP said: "As attacks on the Fountain estate are wrong and sectarian and in essence are anti Republican.

"We would also like to clarify that the young people in the Bogside who are collecting materials for the annual bonfire are no way connected to these attacks on the Fountain, just as the Fountain is not responsible for the young people from the Loyalist side who are attacking young people in the town and running back to the Fountain. These individuals are not from the Fountain estate and this should be clarified.

"Again we would call for calm and ask people to respect the Fountain and its residents and also respect their own community.

"We also at this time demand the PSNI to stop their provocative behaviour towards the young people in the Bogside at once. It is undermining all the good work that has been done on the ground by community activists."
