Ardavon in Derry has celebrated its tenth anniversary and to mark the occasion, the learning disability scheme held a celebration lunch for tenants, families and staff.
Situated at Bonds Hill in the Waterside area of the city, the scheme offers accommodation, support and care for 12 adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities.
Currently owned and managed by Apex Housing Association (Apex), it is part funded by Supporting People and the Western Health and Social Care Trust.
On June 1, 2015, Ardavon moved from its previous location on Northland Road, with Apex providing the contemporary, purpose-built facilities that tenants have now enjoyed for a decade.
Allison Foley, Manager of Ardavon, commented: “The ongoing success of Ardavon is down to an incredible team, who deliver person-centred care and support each day.
“It’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed since we moved into our wonderful Bonds Hill location, and we’re thrilled to be marking our tenth anniversary alongside our tenants and their families.”
Robert Bleakley has lived in Ardavon for 30 years alongside Dympna Markey, Bernadette Bradley and Jackie McBride.
Robert commented: “The new Ardavon is easier to get around and is closer to the local community. The staff are very good, and I enjoy getting away on holidays with support. We were recently on a two-night break to Bundoran.”
Another tenant, Bill Burnside, added: “I like living in Ardavon. I especially enjoy the karaoke parties and birthday celebrations and have also been to Blackpool twice with Ardavon. The care and support I receive is excellent.”
Jacqui Garnon, on behalf of the ‘Friends of Ardavon’, commented: “We are delighted to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the transfer of Ardavon to Apex in June 2015. We congratulate Apex and staff for providing a high-quality home for our twelve residents who moved from the Northland Road residence and congratulate them for the beautiful home that our residents now have.
“We also remember the late Kathleen and Marlene, who were able to enjoy their final days in Ardavon.
