Derry's Altnagelvin Hospital

A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court on a range of public order charges including acting 'in a thoroughly deplorable way' in Altnagelvin Hospital.

Matthew Anderson (24) of no fixed abode admitted a series of offences that occured on April 5 and April 24 this year.

The court heard that Anderson came into contact with police on April 4 in the Foyle Street area and in the course of that he assaulted one officer and resisted him as well.

Anderson was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital and while there he was abusive towards officers and had to be placed in a cell van where he was seen to spit resulting in a criminal damage charge.

The court was also told about an incident on April 24 when Anderson was found without his electronic tag.

Again Anderson became abusive to officers telling one 'I hope your wife and kids die of cancer' and calling them 'Orange b------s'.

Anderson was again seen to spit in a cell van resulting in a criminal damage charge.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that fortunately there had been no serious injury in either incident.

He sentenced Anderson to a total of 6 months in prison and ordered him to pay £205 in compensation for the electronic tag.
