Punk Never Dies: Derry's Sandinos erupts with old-school chaos for a good cause

The ghosts of punk past came screaming back to life last Saturday night as Sandinos was transformed into a sweaty, pogo-fuelled temple of rebellion, unity, and righteous noise for Punk Rockers Reunion 2 - a blistering night of old wave heroes, new wave anthems, and pure DIY spirit, all in aid of the Foyle Down Syndrome Trust.

From the moment Ventura Highway, Damaged, Rudeboy, and Suspect Device hit the stage, it was clear this wasn’t going to be your average nostalgia trip. No sir, this was a full-throttle sonic time machine that launched a packed-out crowd straight back to the chaos and glory of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Grey hair? Bad knees? Mortgage worries? Didn’t matter.

For one glorious night, we were all 16 again - sweaty, loud, and fuelled by something stronger than beer: punk rock defiance.

They tore through punk classics like rabid dogs off the leash — Sham 69, The Jam, The Ruts, The Damned, Sex Pistols, The Undertones, Talking Heads, Jilted John, The Vapours, Stiff Little Fingers, Midnight Oil, The Members, even early, angry U2 — the real deal, before the stadiums and sunglasses. Ska stormed in too, bringing the bounce with Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners, and of course a couple of Clash classics that had the crowd skanking and screaming in full-throated joy.

All performers filled the stage for the encore, a rousing version of hometown anthem Teenage Kicks, what a way to finish off the night!

But the real anthem of the night? Homegrown legends Ventura Highway’s fiery Covid-era call to arms: ‘Stay The F**k At Home’. A proper punk banger - funny, furious, and real. It was the kind of tune that sticks to your boots and brains for weeks.

Amid the chaos, the message was clear: this wasn’t just about music. It was about community. About giving something back. And punk, for all its snarl and sneer, has always had a heart under that leather jacket. The night raised a brilliant £1,910 for the Foyle Down Syndrome Trust - a charity that continues to do life-changing work in Derry and beyond.

Organiser Dee Jenkins summed it up with heartfelt thanks that cut through the feedback and fuzz.

“First of all we would like to thank Ann and her excellent staff at Sandino's for letting us host the event with them again this year. It is very much appreciated. To our sponsor The Undertones Mural Official who once again gave so generously to the charity. Your partnership with us is most welcome.

“To all the musicians from Suspect Device, Rudeboy, Damaged and Ventura Highway 1979 - 2019 and also DJ Alan Giff who gave up their time for free to take part. Without them there is no gig so a massive thank you to you all.

“To sound engineer Cale McElhatton O'Donnell for his patience with us through the day and during the gig. You done an excellent job. And lastly to everyone who attended the reunion.

“The Foyle Down Syndrome Trust would like to thank you all for your contribution towards the charity which is always greatly appreciated. They do excellent work throughout the city and beyond and are very appreciative of the support they receive from events like ours.”

Punk Rockers Reunion 3? Bring. It. On.

If Saturday was anything to go by, punk’s not just alive - it’s bloody thriving. So to the punks, the skins, the ska kids, the two-tone lovers and even the curious newcomers - start dusting off your Docs and sharpening your safety pins. The spirit’s still there. And so are we.

Derry - you absolutely smashed it.
