The Mayor welcomed Equality Commission Chief Commissioner Geraldine McGahey and Deputy Chief Commissioner Neil Anderson to the Guildhall ahead of the Commission’s board meeting.
The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland today held its board meeting at the Guildhall, the home of Derry City and Strabane District Council.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Lilian Seenoi Barr invited the Commission to the Guildhall where they also had the opportunity to engage with people from across the council area about the equality issues that matter most to them.
Speaking from the Guildhall, Geraldine McGahey, Chief Commissioner, Equality Commission for Northern Ireland said: “The Commissioners and I are always keen to meet people across Northern Ireland, so we were pleased to accept this invitation. It is important that we hear directly from people about the equality issues that impact on their lives.
“We want to hear about their experiences and those of the people they support. This helps shape our work and identify opportunities for us to work together to make Northern Ireland a place where everyone is valued and treated with dignity and respect.
“It has been a worthwhile visit, with a warm welcome. Importantly, we have gained valuable insights from those we met with today.”

“We appreciate the Commissioners taking the time to meet the people of Derry City and Strabane District Council to talk about their work. They also listened with interest to local people about their personal experiences as individuals, employees and as advocates for others.
“I firmly believe that by working together to eradicate all forms of prejudice and discrimination we can make a positive impact on everyone’s lives and build a society that celebrates its diversity and difference.”
