Derry Magistrates' Court
A man who was described in court as 'a danger to the public, other roadusers and pedestrians' has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates' Court on a series of driving charges.
Sean Walsh (21) of Faustina Terrace in Derry was charged with dangerous driving, taking and driving away a vehicle and other offences that were said to have occurred on May 11.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
He told the court that at around 8.40pm on May 11 police were on a routine patrol in Creggan and saw a silver van.
One if the officers recognised Walsh as the driver and checks showed he was not insured to drive the vehicle.
The officer said that the vehicle made a sharp turn away from police and didn't stop when police used lights and sirens.
The court heard that the vehicle travelled at speeds 'well in excess for a built up area' and passed children playing in the street.
At one stage there was almost a head on collision involving the van and another vehicle.
Police checks with the registered owner of the vehicle revealed Walsh had not got permission to drive it and that he had been in the company of the owner previously.
Walsh was arrested at am address and a small quantity of drugs was found.
At interview Walsh denied the driving offences but admitted the drug charge.
The officer told the court that Walsh had been disqualified from driving until May 1 and was accused of these offences some ten days later.
He added that police had no confidence Walsh would abide by conditions and said he was a danger on the roads.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client would claim the recognition was mistaken and denied being the driver.
He said his client was not arrested in the vehicle and said he could be released on bail with conditions.
District Judge Oonagh Mullan said she could not envisage any conditions that would prevent Walsh driving and added that he was a danger to the public.
Walsh was remanded in custody to appear again on June 5.
