A man who was released from prison last week has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today for a charge of criminal damage and resisting police.

Stephen McColgan (33) of no fixed abode appeared charged with criminal damage to a TV remote control and resisting police on May 6.

The court heard that at 6.30pm on May 6 police were told of an incident where McColgan was staying with friends and they had been drinking together.

The defendant was then said 'to have gone mad' and smashed a remote control.

Police went looking for those involved and found them in Sackville Street and went to arrest the defendant.

He tried to make off and resisted police.

Defence counsel Grainne McAnaney said her client had pleaded at the earliest opportunity and the offending was 'at the lower end of the scale'.

District Judge Conor Heaney said that the defendant had 'an extensive record' and imposed a sentence of 2 months in prison suspended for 12 months.
