Derry Magistrates' Court
A judge has said he would be failing in his duty if he ignored the fact that a man currently on bail for drug offences has been charged with further drug offences.
Martin McShane (49) of Glenbank Road in Derry appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with possessing class A, B and C drugs on April 28 and resisting police.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
The court heard that police were called by a housing association who said that a woman could not access her address as it was believed her partner, McShane, had barricaded the door.
Police gained entry and found McShane and it was said there was pregablin and other drugs.
McShane began struggling with police.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that these charges were simple possession and asked the court to grant bail 'as his last chance'.
District Judge Ted Magill said that McShane is currently on bail on other drug charges and 'he goes doing it again '.
The judge said McShane has 84 previous convictions with 28 of them for drugs.
He said that he would be falling in his duty if he ignored the fact that McShane was charged with drugs while on bail.
He refused bail and McShane was remanded in custody to appear again on May 22.
