Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Ciara Ferguson
A United Ireland is a ‘once in lifetime’ chance to undo the disaster of Brexit, it has been claimed.
Commenting as Derry Sinn Féin launched a new leaflet on the benefits of Irish Unity, Foyle MLA Ciara Ferguson said: “The damage caused by Brexit has been huge, socially, economically, environmentally and will continue to impact for generations to come.
“Here in the North, we were shielded from some of the worst impacts as we remain aligned to many EU regulations due to the Windsor Framework.
“However, there have still been huge and negative impacts. Farmers have lost vital subsidies, community organisations, peace, environmental and infrastructure projects have lost financial support, access to crucial health schemes has been blocked and now we see the imposition of ridiculous restrictions on visitors travelling on this island.
“There are many other areas where Brexit continues to have a negative impact on the lives of people here which is why the debate on Irish Unity has become so important.
“The EU has already committed to automatic re-entry for the entire island on the basis of reunification. That will restore the rights, protections and funding lost as a result of the Brexit which was forced upon us.
“That is a huge incentive and when a unity referendum comes we will be choosing between a future within the EU or outside it.
“Given the disaster unleashed by Brexit, that is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it is incumbent on us all to begin planning for that outcome now.”
