Strand Road police station
Derry Magistrates' Court heard today about a 'bizarre' case where a man went to the Strand Road PSNI station and asked to be arrested.
Stephen O'Neill (26) of The Fountain in Derry appeared charged with assaulting a police officer on February 23 this year.
The court heard that the defendant was 'heavily intoxicated' in the early hours of the morning.
He went to the Strand Road station and was described as being in 'a volatile state' asking to be arrested and handcuffed.
Police advised O'Neill to go home and sleep it off but he refused then he assaulted an officer and had to be taken to the ground.
O'Neill continued to be aggressive while being taken into custody.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that his client had 'very real regrets about his behaviour' that he said was 'more than pushing and shoving'.
District Judge Ted Magill said that it appeared drink had gone to the defendant's head.
He said he would 'keep an eye' on O'Neill and imposed a conditional discharge for 12 months and orderedhim to pay £250 in compensation.
