A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with a number of driving offences.

John Reilly (30) of Barrs Lane in Derry was charged with, on March 25, driving with no licence and no insurance, obstructing police and taking a car without permission.

Police observed him driving and ran a routine check on the car, discovering that it was insured to a female driver.

Reilly attempted to run away after police pulled him over but was caught and found not to have a valid driver's licence and therefore no insurance.

Defence solicitor Shannon Doherty said that there had been no statement from Reilly's partner, the owner of the car, although she did confirm that he did not have permission to drive it.

He was disqualified from driving for nine months and ordered to pay a fine of £550.
