A man who sprayed cleaning fluid into a woman's face has been fined at Derry Magistrates' Court.

James Edmund McClean (53) of Greenhaw Terrace in Derry admitted one charge of assault that occurred on August 24 last year.

The court heard that the woman was sitting in a local bar when the defendant approached her and sprayed her with cleaning fluid.

The woman claimed 'it went all over my face' but McClean said it was just 'frivolity'.

Defence solicitor Kevin Casey said the basis of the situation was a family matter.

He said that the charge reflected that it was not a more serious matter.

The solicitor said that his client was 'embarrassed and regretful' about the whole incident.

Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne said the court took 'a serious view of this' and the defendant was lucky it was not more serious.

He fined McClean £200.
