Sentence suspended for Derry man for disorderly behavior in Altnagelvin Hospital

Derry Magistrates' Court heard today how police had to break up a fight between two men outside the Emergency Department of Altnagelvin Hospital.

Brogan McKay (20) of Rockmills in Derry admitted a charge of disorderly behavior in Altnagelvin on December 26, 2023.

He also admitted two theft charges from a local shop on March 1, 2024.

The court heard that police were in attendance at Altnagelvin on a different matter when staff approached them about two men causing a nuisance in A&E.

Police warned the males on numerous occasions to stop their behaviour but it continued.

Then shouting match broke out involving the defendant and another male.

Police were then told about a fight outside the Department and they broke it up.

As regards the theft charges the court was told McKay entered a local shop on two occasions and left without paying.

He was recognised by staff and when police went to his address they found a quantity of diazepam.

A defence solicitor said there had been no repeat of anything between the two men since this incident.

McKay was given a three month sentence suspended for two years and fined £200.
