Derry Magistrates' Court
Derry Magistrates' Court heard today how after items were stolen from Fraser's shop in Foyleside police found a bag containing a phone, drugs and teeth believed to belong to the alleged thief.
Robert Barry Crossan (48) of Creggan Heights in Derry appeared charged with the theft of £596 worth of items from Frasers on March 16.
He was also charged with the theft of food items from Iceland also in Foyleside on the same date.
Crossan also faced a range of drug charges including possessing drugs with intent to supply, being concerned in the supply of drugs and possessing drugs on dates between October 8, 2022 and November 8, 2022.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
The officer said it was 'a convoluted case' and told the court that following reports of the thefts on March 16 police responded and after finding the bag with the drugs, phone and teeth went to an address where they found Crossan.
He was said to have been 'unresponsive' and had allegedly consumed some of the foodstuff stolen from Iceland.
Other items were found in the freezer.
The officer said that there was evidence hat Crossan was involved in the supply of drugs and if released will re-offend in order to feed his addiction.
The officer described Crossan as a repeat offender who would reoffend and breach bail if released.
Defence solicitor Caoimhe McDaid said if released Crossan would seek 'immediate assistance' for his drug problems.
She said that Crossan was 'quite remorseful' after being charged.
Deputy District Judge Brian Archer said the defendant had a 'terrible record' and he was concerned if released he would commit further offences.
He refused bail and said a period in custody would be 'beneficial ' to Crossan.
He was remanded in custody to appear again on April 10.
