Man who bit another man on the ear in 'a disgraceful assault' jailed

A man who bit another man on the ear in what a judge described as 'a disgraceful assault' has been jailed at Derry Magistrates' Court. 

Ryan Haltan (26) with an address at Abbey Ring in Hollywood County Down admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on April 16, 2023.

He also admitted two assaults and a disorderly behaviour charge on the same date.

The court was told that on the date Haltan was a resident at the Banks of the Faughan hostel and tried to leave.

The owner reminded him if he left he would be in breach of his bail conditions and the defendant 'became aggressive ' and swung at the owner.

Another resident intervened to assist the owner and was bitten on the ear leaving a cut.

At interview Haltan said his behaviour was due to 'anger and frustration '.

A defence barrister said the accused had nothing like this on his record. 

He said that while in custody the defendant had sought help for his issues.

Haltan was jailed for eight months.
