Derry man ordered to pay compensation after damaging vehicle

A man who damaged a vehicle after another man refused to give him a lift has been fined at Derry Magistrate's Court and ordered to pay compensation. 

Brendan James Clift (37) of Jasmine Court in Derry admitted a series of charges relating to the incident that occurred on January 5 this year.

The court heard that the injured party and his girlfriend were in their vehicle in Waterloo Place after getting a Chinese takeaway. 

The defendant approached the car and asked tor a lift but the driver refused as Clift was intoxicated. 

The defendant was asked to move away but didn't and then assaulted the injured party by punching him several times. 

The man got out of his vehicle to restrain Clift but when he got in again he was punched several times through the window.

He then heard 'two loud bangs' at the rear of his vehicle and after police detained Clift he found a brake light had been broken and there was a 'large dent' in a rear panel. 

At interview Clift made some admissions.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client was 'very intoxicated' on the night in question. 

He said Clift knew the other driver and asked for a lift but the injured party 'did not want this drunk man in his car.'

The solicitor said that Clift was willing to pay compensation and it wasa case of acting 'out of character with too much drink'.

Clift was fined £300 and orderedto pay £400 in compensation.
