Derry Magistrates' Court

Derry Magistrates' Court heard today how a row over children resulted in a woman breaking a window in another woman's premises.

Karen Hart (40) of Heron Way in Derry was charged with two assaults and a charge of criminal damage that occurred on June 8 2024.

The court heard that police attended an address and the injured party, who was described as being 'distraught', told police she had been sitting in a room when Hart had appeared at a window shouting about someone insulting her daughter.

The woman told police that the next thing the window was smashed.

A witness who was present said that she knew the defendant and claimed she had a hammer with her.

Hart denied the offences.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said the parties lived within two streets of each other.

He said there had be no reoccurrence and his client was 'embarrassed' by her behaviour and had just 'lost her temper'.

Hart was given a four month sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay compensation of £251.
