The Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Jon Boutcher, has condemned “shocking” attacks on police officers in Derry City and Strabane.
Chief Constable Jon Boutcher, said: “It’s absolutely shocking that nine officers were injured while on duty in Derry City and Strabane district over the weekend.
“My message to those who think this behaviour is acceptable, it is that, unequivocally, it is not; and it should never be seen as ‘part of the job’.
“I’m proud of the resilience shown by these officers, all of whom remained on duty, serving their community.
“My priority is their safety and welfare and as an organisation we will ensure support is available where it’s needed.
“Our officers are here to help to keep people safe and their brave actions stand in stark contrast to the actions of those who perpetrated the attacks.
Area Chief Inspector Luke Moyne said in one of the incidents, a woman “ran towards an officer with a knife” as police responded to a disturbance at a house party.
The incidents also included assaults ranging from officers being head-butted and kicked to blood being spat at them, while two officers were injured dealing with a large crowd of people in Derry city.
Mr Moyne said on Sunday that police had a number of people in custody who are “facing a potential court appearance as a result of their disgraceful actions”.
He also said all the officers remained on duty despite being injured.
