£250,000 fraud case involving Donegal woman adjourned at Derry Magistrate's Court

Derry Magistrates' Court

A Derry man charged with a series of offences against his mother who is currently being treated for cancer has been jailed at the local Magistrates' Court.

Jamie McCarron (31) of Slievemore Park in Derry admitted assaulting his mother on September 9 last year.

He also admitted a threat to kill charge as well as behaviour deemed to be domestic abuse again on the same date.

McCarron also admitted possessing 200 Diazepam tablets.

The court heard that police received a report from the injured party that person had been abusing her for a period.

She said he had subjected her to 'both physical and mental abuse' calling her names and throwing things.

The woman said the defendant had threatened to kill her and she added she was 'fearful' to stay in her home.

When police responded they found 200 Diazepam tablets in the defendant's pocket.

Defence counsel Michael Donaghey said it was 'a very unpleasant' set of facts.

He said McCarron had had a drug problem and is often the case the addict lashes out at the one who cares the most.

The barrister said that the language used by his client was 'horrendous '.

McCarron was sentenced to nine months in prison.
