Rowdy scenes at Derry Magistrate's Court as anti lock down protesters disrupted proceedings

Derry Magistrates' Court

A man who flicked a lit cigarette and threw a lighter at his partner has been jailed at Derry Magistrates' Court.

Darragh McGrath (18) of Duncreggan Road in Derry admitted a charge of assault that occurred on November 13 last.

The court was told police were called to Foyle Haven to a report of an aggressive male who was refusing to leave.

Police found McGrath who was 'aggressive and abusive' and they were told he had entered the premises along with his partner and had thrown a lighter and flicked a lit cigarette at her but there had been no injuries.

A defence barrister told the court his client accepted his behaviour was 'reckless'.

He said the defendant was usually charged with public order offences rather than this kind of thing.

Deputy District Judge Laura Ievers said this offending concerned the court as did McGrath's record for one so young.

She jailed him for three months.
